Asian Handicap

As it's name suggests, Asian Handicap originates from Far East. Using this method of betting, punter can eliminate the possibility of a draw in a football game. One team will be handicapped at the start of the match (the favorite), while the other team will be given the advantage of the same amount. Mentioned amount of goals will be than added to the final score of football match. Asian Handicap eliminates the possibility of a draw result, and generally spoken it increases winning chance from 33.3% to 50%.

There are few types of Asian Handicap, which are explained on following examples.

0:0 Asian Handicap

Chelsea v Manchester Utd 1.91 0:0 1.98

This type of Asian Handicap is known as level ball handicap, and is usual for close games, or games between equally matched sides. If you bet on Chelsea in this match, you will win your bet only if Chelsea win the match, and in case of draw you will get your stake back. Also, if you bet on Manchester Utd you will aslo win your bet if Manchester Utd win the match, and get your stake back in case of draw.

So, possibility of draw is not relevant in this type of bet, and you will get your stake back if match finishes without winner, whichever team you backed.

If you backed Chelsea and they won the match, your winning will be MatchOdds x YourStake. In other words, if you staked £100 on Chelsea in this match and they won, you will win £100x1.91=£191, and make £91 of net profit.

If you backed Manchester Utd and they won the match, and you staked £100, you will win £100x1.98=£198, and make £98 of net profit.

0:1/4 Asian Handicap

This type of handicap introduces new rule if the game ends in draw, and in that situation you win or lose half of the ammount you could win of lose if match didn't finish in draw. Let's take a lok at following example:

Tottenham v Everton 1.90 0:1/4 1.95

This means that at the start of the match Everton are leading by 1/4 of goal, or that Tottenham are giving 1/4 ball to Everton.

If you bet on Tottenham and they win the match, you will win your bet. Your winnings will be calculated by same formula like in previous example: £100x1.90=£190, which gives you £90 of net profit.

If you bet on Everton and they win the match, you will also win win your bet, with winnings of £100x1.95=£195, and with net profit of £95.

But what happens now if match ends in draw? If you staked £100 on Tottenham and match ended in draw, you will lose half of your stake, because Everton 'won' the match by 1/4 ball given at the start, and your net loss will be £50. If you staked £100 on Everton and match ended in draw, you will win half of your winnings, or in other words you will get half of your stake back (£50) and the other half of your stake will be the winning bet: £50x1.95=£97.5, which gives you net profit of £47.5.

0:1/2 Asian Handicap

In this type of handicap, you will again either win or lose. Here is the example again:

Newcastle v Sunderland 1.90 0:1/2 1.95

This means that at the start of the match Sunderland are leading by 1/2 of goal, or that Newcastle are giving 1/2 ball to Sunderland. If you bet on Newcastle and they win the match, you will win your bet. Your winnings will be calculated like in examples above: £100x1.90=£190, which gives you £90 of net profit.

If you bet on Sunderland and they win the match, you will also win win your bet, with winnings of £100x1.95=£195, and with net profit of £95.

Now, what if match ended in draw? If you staked £100 on Newcastle and match ended in draw, you will lose your stake, because Sunderland 'won' the match by 1/2 ball given at the start, and your net loss will be your full stake, or £100. If you backed Sunderland and match ended in draw, than you don't have any reason to worry. Your winnings will be the same just like if they won the match, or in other words, you will win your bet in full amount as long as Sunderland don't lose the game. Your winnings wll be £100x1.95=£195, with net profit of £95.

0:3/4 Asian Handicap

3/4 handicap uses similar rule like 1/4 handicap, but just if game ends with one goal victory for the favourite. Let's take a look at example again:

Blackburn v Bolton 1.90 0:3/4 1.95

This means that at the start of the match Bolton are leading by 3/4 of goal, or that Blackburn are giving 3/4 ball to Bolton. If you bet on Portsmouth you will take full winnings only if Portsmouth win by at least two goals. If you bet on Bolton, you get full winnings if the match ends in draw, or Bolton win the game.

As mentioned above, special rule is introduced if the game ends with 1 goal victory for favorite, in this case Portsmouth. If you bet on Portsmouth and they win exactly by 1 goal, you will win half of your bet. If you bet on Bolton and they lose by 1 goal margin, they will lose half of your stake.

Calculations of winnings are similar to calculations at 1/4 handicap. If you bet £100 on Portsmouth and they win by 1 goal, your winnings are £50x1.90=£95, plus you get another half of your stake (£50) back. If you bet £100 on Bolton and they lost by 1 goal margin, than you lose half of your stake (£50) and another half you get back.

0:1 Asian Handicap

In this type of Asian Handicap, we have special rule again in case when favorite wins by 1 goal margin, which we'll see on following example:

Arsenal v Everton 1.90 0:1 1.95

In this case Arsenal are 1 goal down at the beginning of the match, or that Everton leads by 1 goal. If you bet £100 on Arsenal, they will have to win by 2 goals at least to win your bet. If they win only by 1 goal, you will get your stake back, and in all other cases you will lose your £100.

If you bet £100 on Everton, than you will win your bet if the game ends in draw, or Everton wins. If they lose exactly by 1 goal, you will have your £100 back, and if they lose by 2 goals or more, your bet is a loser.

In more drastic situations, when there is huge difference between favorite and underdog, asian handicaps can be higher: 1 1/4, 1 1/2, 1 3/4, 2, etc, etc, but the principle is the same like in previous examples.

Also, if the favorite is playing away from home, asian handicaps are possible again, and this time they look like 1/4:0, 1/2:0, etc.
